Studio Lab / Color & Edge Lab

Color & Edge Lab: compare screen fields without turning perception into a score.

Adjust two browser HSL fields, their relative lightness, boundary softness, proportion, and repeated scale. The specimen is an original screen exercise, not a pigment reconstruction or historical artwork substitute.

Learning objective

Change screen relationships without claiming a universal response.

Manipulate generalized screen color fields, hue adjacency, HSL lightness offset, boundary softness, field proportion, and field scale to inspect optical relationships without reconstructing a historical artwork or treating browser color coordinates as measured pigment data.

Method: Field A is fixed at 52% browser HSL lightness; Field B can move ±30 HSL-lightness points within a bounded display range. Hue separation is the shortest arithmetic distance around the 0–359° HSL hue wheel. Edge softness only widens a generated CSS transition band. Field proportion changes the horizontal split, and field scale changes repeated module width. HSL saturation is not perceptual chroma, HSL lightness is not luminance, and the model does not compute ΔE, contrast-quality scores, color harmony, optical-vibration scores, or aesthetic rankings.

Historical boundary: No preset is named for an artist, artwork, movement faction, proprietary pigment, commercial paint, museum installation, or signature palette. The lab does not reconstruct historical color, infer an artist's intent, diagnose a viewer's perception, or convert generated fields into evidence of quality, influence, authorship, movement membership, or historical technique.

Accessibility: Every variable uses a labeled native range control with a visible numeric value. Region A and Region B are text-labeled, the live text equivalent reports all screen-coordinate settings, and the default specimen plus parameter dictionary remain available without JavaScript. The interaction has no autoplay or required motion. In forced-colors mode the geometry and labels remain available even though the intended color relationship cannot be reproduced by the operating-system palette.

Screen-relative field model

Compare adjacency, boundary, proportion, and scale.

HSL coordinates are browser interface values. They are not pigment recipes, spectral measurements, or perceptual-quality scores.

Neutral relationship presets

28°

Browser HSL hue coordinate for Field A. It is a screen coordinate, not a measured pigment wavelength or historical color match.

208°

Browser HSL hue coordinate for Field B. The lab reports arithmetic hue-wheel separation but does not score harmony, beauty, or perceptual quality.

72%

Shared browser HSL saturation coordinate. HSL saturation is not pigment concentration, chroma, spectral purity, or a museum color measurement.

0 pts

Offsets Field B from Field A's fixed 52% HSL lightness. HSL lightness is not physical luminance or a perceptually uniform lightness measure.

12%

Widens the generated transition band between the two screen fields, from a narrow boundary toward a broad blend.

50%

Changes how much horizontal area belongs to Field A in the main specimen and each repeated module.

5/9

Changes the width of repeated adjacency modules. It is a screen-layout scale, not an artwork dimension.

Text equivalent

Field A HSL 28° / 72% / 52%; Field B HSL 208° / 72% / 52%; 180° shortest hue-wheel separation (widely separated hue-wheel coordinates); matched HSL lightness; narrow / hard-edged transition; fields are near equal at 50% / 50%; medium repeated modules. Screen rendering varies by browser, display, color profile, brightness, viewing conditions, and user settings.

Parameter dictionary

What the variables mean in this screen model.

Arithmetic coordinate relationships are inspectable; perceptual and historical conclusions are not generated.

Field A hue

Browser HSL hue coordinate for Field A. It is a screen coordinate, not a measured pigment wavelength or historical color match.

Range 0–359°

Field B hue

Browser HSL hue coordinate for Field B. The lab reports arithmetic hue-wheel separation but does not score harmony, beauty, or perceptual quality.

Range 0–359°

Shared HSL saturation

Shared browser HSL saturation coordinate. HSL saturation is not pigment concentration, chroma, spectral purity, or a museum color measurement.

Range 10–100%

Field B HSL lightness offset

Offsets Field B from Field A's fixed 52% HSL lightness. HSL lightness is not physical luminance or a perceptually uniform lightness measure.

Range -30–30 pts

Edge softness

Widens the generated transition band between the two screen fields, from a narrow boundary toward a broad blend.

Range 0–100%

Field A proportion

Changes how much horizontal area belongs to Field A in the main specimen and each repeated module.

Range 20–80%

Field scale

Changes the width of repeated adjacency modules. It is a screen-layout scale, not an artwork dimension.

Range 1–9/9
