Evidence practice

Read a relationship, then test its evidence

A natural-history illustration can suggest a relationship between an insect, its stages and a plant. The learning task is to distinguish what is depicted together from what the accompanying source actually establishes. Start with the publication context below, then document the exact plate before proposing an identification.

What the work-level sources support

The Natural History Museum’s account of Merian’s work describes her study of living insects, their life cycles and host plants. The Royal Collection’s entry for Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium dates that work to 1705. These references provide context for the publication; neither is presented here as proof of the identity of the particular BHL page linked by this ICU record.

The Royal Collection also distinguishes professional coloring of fully etched plates from versions colored by Merian over lightly etched outlines. That is a reason to check a specific copy’s production history, not to assign one colorist or process to every image. The retained technique keywords above are not a fresh examination of this digital surrogate.

Exact-item boundary

This record retains Biodiversity Heritage Library page 41398732 as its original source pointer. Its image and page-level catalog details could not be reopened during this repair. The plate number, edition of that digitized copy, depicted species, individual production roles and current rendition rights therefore remain unverified here. A year in the ICU route is not proof of the surrogate’s edition. No substitute plate or generated reconstruction is shown.

Build an observation-to-evidence record

  1. Open the retained BHL source. First record its work title, copy or edition information and plate/page label. If the source is unavailable, keep the exact-item exercise pending; use the museum account only for work-level learning.
  2. When the image is available, describe one insect form and one plant feature without assigning scientific names. Include a position or visible label so another reader can locate them.
  3. List the stages actually shown. Do not add a stage from general knowledge because you expect a complete life cycle.
  4. Locate the accompanying text. Separate “shown together” from a supported claim that an insect feeds on that plant or develops into a particular adult.
  5. Write one qualified conclusion and one unresolved question. An exact modern name needs a traceable identification source; a label or visual resemblance alone may not settle it.
Check the strength of your conclusion

“The image places these forms together” describes a composition after you have inspected it. “They are stages of one species on its host plant” requires additional evidence. When the exact image is unavailable, neither sentence should be reported as an observation you made. Keep a blank field rather than borrowing details from another Merian plate.

Use the six-step reading method for the evidence record. The Hooke plate supplies an independently reopened institutional item and a different close-reading exercise while this exact-item verification remains open.

Trust boundary

What this page does not invent.

ASEU keeps historical claims, current scientific reconciliation, rights status, creator roles, provenance, image descent and editorial interpretation separate when the sources require them to stay separate.

R000067 is a parent integration, not a new ASEU research stage. It materializes the current canonical route and parent-participation contracts without declaring ASEU040 complete or expanding the source corpus.
