Studio Lab / Gesture Lab

Gesture Lab: change structure without borrowing a signature hand.

Adjust neutral procedural marks to see how direction, tempo, density, overlap, rhythm, spacing, width, and mark behavior change a field. The output is an original interface diagram, not an artwork recreation.

Learning objective

Treat gesture as adjustable structure, not a borrowed signature.

Manipulate generalized mark direction, tempo, density, overlap, rhythm, spacing, width, and mark behavior to see how abstract visual structure changes without imitating a named artist or reconstructing a historical artwork.

Method: Gesture Lab uses a fixed deterministic pseudo-random layout and simple geometry. The controls manipulate interface variables only. Tempo is not a measured historical speed; mark width is not a claimed brush size; behavior labels are general geometric treatments. The same settings always begin from the same neutral procedural seed so changes are inspectable rather than decorative noise.

Accessibility: All seven numeric variables use labeled native range inputs with visible output values, mark behavior uses a native select, presets are buttons, and a live text summary describes the current structure. The default specimen and full parameter explanations remain in base HTML when JavaScript is unavailable. There is no autoplay or required motion.

Procedural workbench

Change one variable. Watch the field reorganize.

The controls describe generalized geometry only. They do not map to named artists, historical works, or verified studio measurements.

Neutral structural presets

34°

Rotates the dominant travel angle of the procedural marks.

5/9

Changes mark travel length and variation. It is an interface variable, not a measured historical hand speed.

40 marks

Changes how many marks are active in the field.

45%

Compresses or releases the vertical zones so marks cross more or less often.

60%

Increases periodic alternation in angle and mark length.

62%

Moves the field from clustered placement toward more evenly distributed placement.

4 px

Changes the procedural line thickness without claiming a historical tool or material.

Text equivalent

diagonal field at 34°; moderate tempo; 40 active marks; moderate overlap; alternating rhythm; mixed spacing; 4 px linear marks.

Parameter dictionary

What each control means here.

These are interface definitions, not historical claims.

Direction

Rotates the dominant travel angle of the procedural marks.

Range 0–180°

Tempo

Changes mark travel length and variation. It is an interface variable, not a measured historical hand speed.

Range 1–9/9

Density

Changes how many marks are active in the field.

Range 12–72 marks

Overlap

Compresses or releases the vertical zones so marks cross more or less often.

Range 0–100%

Rhythm

Increases periodic alternation in angle and mark length.

Range 0–100%

Spacing

Moves the field from clustered placement toward more evenly distributed placement.

Range 0–100%

Mark width

Changes the procedural line thickness without claiming a historical tool or material.

Range 1–12 px

Linear behavior

Straight continuous procedural marks.

General geometry

Arced behavior

Rounded marks with a generalized curve treatment.

General geometry

Segmented behavior

Broken marks that emphasize interval and interruption.
