Build a Defensible Research Trail

A research path through critical definitions, gallery circulation, The Club, international circulation, primary bibliographic records, and explicit graph edges. The goal is to practice claim boundaries, not to produce a single movement doctrine.

historical context

Competing critical definitions, 1946–1965

Abstract Expressionism was named and interpreted through multiple critical frameworks. Coates, Rosenberg, Greenberg, Ashton, Hess, Sandler, and others did not produce one unified doctrine; AEU makes that plurality navigable without collapsing it into a consensus definition.

Context remains context-only; this step does not convert proximity or chronology into causation.

historical context

Gallery and dealer circulation, 1944–1966

Dealer and gallery records document how artists circulated through exhibitions, promotion, sales, cooperative spaces, and changing commercial networks. AEU treats those records as institutional context, not as a ranking of importance or proof of aesthetic similarity.

Context remains context-only; this step does not convert proximity or chronology into causation.

historical context

The Club as discussion and social network, 1948–1965

Archival records document The Club as a recurring site for panels, lectures, membership, and social exchange. AEU uses it as a discussion-network context; proximity to The Club is never enough to infer membership, influence, or a common style.

Context remains context-only; this step does not convert proximity or chronology into causation.

The New American Painting as Shown in Eight European Countries 1958–1959

Historical MoMA exhibition represented with a source-verified partial checklist. AEU does not infer a complete checklist from selected online records.

Checklist coverage and uncertainty remain exactly as stored; inclusion here does not imply a complete historical checklist.

The Content of Abstract Art

The Archives of American Art preserves a circa-1965 transcript for a panel titled “The Content of Abstract Art” moderated by Irving Sandler. AEU treats it as a discussion record, not as a single-author essay or a consensus definition.

AEU uses bibliographic metadata and original summaries; no long copyrighted criticism is reproduced here.

Gutai’s postwar Japanese practice and international exchange

The Guggenheim’s Gutai retrospective identifies the Gutai Art Association as a Japanese postwar collective active from 1954 to 1972. AEU uses this to make a distinct regional and international history discoverable while refusing to classify Gutai as a branch, precursor, or consequence of Abstract Expressionism without item-level evidence.

Context remains context-only; this step does not convert proximity or chronology into causation.

Save/resume boundary

If ICU Save/My Universe is mounted by the parent, the path can be saved as one entity. AEU does not implement a second account, resume, recommendation, or persistence layer.

Evidence boundary

Stages reuse existing AEU records and their source/uncertainty rules. Sequence is pedagogical, not a claim of causation, influence, priority, canon, or quality.
