BKU / LAB / GEARING
See what one tooth changes.
A simple gear ratio is only the start. Add effective wheel diameter and cadence to translate sprocket choices into distance per crank revolution and theoretical speed.
What the calculator is doing
Gear ratio = front teeth ÷ rear teeth. Gear inches = ratio × effective wheel diameter. Development = wheel circumference × ratio. Theoretical speed multiplies development by cadence and converts distance per minute to km/h.
The result is a mechanical approximation. Real speed can differ because effective rolling diameter, tire deformation, cadence variation, drivetrain losses and riding conditions differ.
ICU-EXPEDITION-025 / UNIT CONTRACT
Normalize the units before interpreting the number.
- Chainring and rear sprocket inputs are tooth counts.
- Effective wheel diameter may be entered in inches or millimeters; the enhanced lab converts to one normalized calculation.
- Gear inches remain inches by definition; development is shown in meters with a feet equivalent; theoretical speed is shown in km/h with mph equivalent.
- Effective outside diameter is not an ISO bead-seat diameter and does not establish tire/rim compatibility.
- Theoretical speed is a kinematic reference, not a prediction of real speed or a safety/suitability score.
