Episode 3 · The Light Below the Stairs

The archive's lowest stair ended at a concrete wall.

Everyone knew this. The basement plan showed no level beneath it. Yet by midnight, water was dripping upward from the bottom step.

Eli carried the lantern. Sana carried the Index.

The book's newest page remained blank except for a faint gray line that lengthened every time they descended.

At the wall, the lantern brightened.

A doorway appeared in the concrete.

“Number?” Eli asked.

Sana handed him a pencil.

He wrote B-0 on a paper tag and tied it to the lantern handle.

The door opened inward.

Beyond it was the old station platform from the flood photographs. Water hung in the air like glass, shoulder-high but motionless. Benches, signs, and luggage carts waited beneath its surface. At the far end, a row of lamps glowed underwater.

The lantern in Eli's hand pulled toward them.

Sana read from the Index. “When displaced lights gather, return the indexed light to the first recorded site.”

“That's it?”

“That's the instruction.”

“What happens to us?”

“The Index is not a safety manual.”

They stepped onto the platform.

The suspended water parted around the lantern in a narrow tunnel. Eli and Sana walked between walls of motionless floodwater. Fish-shaped shadows moved on the other side, though no fish had lived in the city's river for years.

At the end of the platform stood an empty hook.

Eli hung the lantern there.

Every submerged lamp went dark.

The water fell.

Not onto them. Downward, impossibly far, as if the platform had become a bridge above a black sky. The old station vanished with it.

Eli opened his eyes.

He and Sana stood at the bottom of the ordinary archive stairs. Concrete wall. Dry floor. No doorway.

The Lantern Index lay open in Sana's hands.

The gray line had become a final entry.

B-0. LANTERN RETURNED. WEATHER CONTAINED. TWO PRESENT.

Below it, fresh ink appeared.

NEXT LIGHT: ROOFTOP, NORTH ANNEX. RED. MOVING AGAINST WIND.

Eli looked at Sana.

She closed the book.

“Coffee first,” she said.

This time, Eli did not ask whether she was joking.
