Formula and boundary

Explicit formulas

gross_wall_area = 2 × (length + width) × heightpaintable_wall_area = gross_wall_area − openingscoated_area = paintable_wall_area × coatsadjusted_area = coated_area × (1 + waste_pct ÷ 100)required_volume = adjusted_area ÷ coveragecontainers = ceil(required_volume ÷ container_size)

Assumptions

  • Walls are treated as rectangular and ceiling/floor paint is excluded.
  • Opening area is entered as one combined area in the selected unit system.
  • Coverage rate is supplied by the visitor; ICU does not guess a manufacturer coverage rate.
  • The same number of coats applies to all included wall area.
  • Waste allowance is an explicit visitor-entered percentage.

Known unknowns

  • Primer requirements
  • Surface texture, porosity and repair needs
  • Color-change hiding power
  • Spills, touch-up and leftover preferences beyond the entered waste allowance
  • Actual product coverage under site conditions

Validation rules

  • Unit-system changes clear unit-dependent numeric values instead of relabeling them.
  • Opening area must be smaller than gross wall area.
  • All required numeric inputs must be finite and within their declared bounds.

Unit safety

Imperial mode expects feet, square feet, square-feet-per-gallon and gallons. Metric mode expects metres, square metres, square-metres-per-litre and litres. Switching modes clears unit-dependent measurements instead of pretending the same number has a different unit.
