Repeated vertebrate miniaturization
The Paedophryne amauensis paper places the frog in a broader discussion of extreme vertebrate miniaturization and notes that miniaturization occurs across many animal groups.
How it forms / works
This universe keeps those ideas adjacent but not interchangeable. Some research directly studies evolutionary miniaturization; other records simply document species that are very small.
Mechanism & limits
Primary research can show patterns within a lineage without turning every tiny species into the same biological story.
The Paedophryne amauensis paper places the frog in a broader discussion of extreme vertebrate miniaturization and notes that miniaturization occurs across many animal groups.
The Brookesia nana paper compares miniaturized chameleons and discusses unusual proportional relationships in genital size. That is a clade-specific study, not a universal rule for miniature species.
Bee hummingbirds, tiny bats, shrews and pygmy seahorses live in very different evolutionary and ecological contexts. This release does not claim one mechanism explains all of them.
Three checks
Use these as a reasoning sequence, not a taxonomic test.
Look for adult status, sexual maturity, a taxonomic diagnosis, or an adult range. Juvenile size should not stand in for adult species size.
Record whether the source gives mass, total length, body length, snout–vent length, or another basis. Do not drop the basis in downstream cards.
A type description based on two specimens and a broad population reference are different evidence situations. Both can be useful if their limits stay visible.
