The quickest way to sharpen an open aesthetic is to show what does not automatically count. These pairs are conceptual tools, not policing rules.

Eight boundaries

Empty, eerie and abandoned are not definitions.

Use the diagnostic question under each contrast. If the answer changes, your interpretation probably depends on more than a surface vibe.

Empty ≠ automatically liminal

Liminal sideEmptiness changes the meaning of a space because the space implies passage, use, or a before/after state.
Contrast sideA vacant landscape or unused room can simply be empty.

Diagnostic question: Remove the emptiness. Is there still a threshold, transition, temporal shift, or category ambiguity?

Liminal vs uncanny

Liminal sideLiminal describes an in-between relation or threshold condition.
Contrast sideUncanny describes an effect of strange familiarity or norm deviation; it can occur without a transition.

Diagnostic question: Name the transition separately from the unease. If you cannot, the image may be uncanny but not strongly liminal.

Liminal vs surreal

Liminal sideOften preserves ordinary spatial grammar and lets ambiguity emerge from context, timing, vacancy, or repetition.
Contrast sideSurreal work can openly violate reality, causality, scale, or object logic.

Diagnostic question: Would the scene still make sense as a real place, even if it feels displaced?

Liminal vs dreamcore

Liminal sideCan be emotionally neutral, eerie, calm, nostalgic or procedural; the threshold relation is central.
Contrast sideDreamcore is a broader internet-aesthetic family that may prioritize dream logic, symbolic text, childhood memory, or impossible imagery.

Diagnostic question: Is the scene organized by transition, or mainly by dream association?

Liminal vs ruin / abandonment

Liminal sideMay be immaculate, maintained and fully functional; disuse is optional.
Contrast sideRuin imagery centers decay, abandonment, material history or failure of maintenance.

Diagnostic question: Would the scene retain its in-between quality if every surface were newly maintained?

Liminal vs horror

Liminal sideCan create uncertainty without threat, monster, gore or danger.
Contrast sideHorror may use threat as its primary organizing device.

Diagnostic question: Remove explicit danger. Does the scene still hold a meaningful threshold condition?

Liminal vs generic transit space

Liminal sideThe passage state is made perceptible through framing, timing, context or contrast.
Contrast sideAn airport corridor or lobby is not inherently liminal merely because people pass through it.

Diagnostic question: What specific cue makes the transition perceptible rather than merely functional?

Liminal vs Backrooms shorthand

Liminal sideThe visual field is broad: thresholds, edges, transition states and contextual ambiguity.
Contrast sideBackrooms imagery is one recognizable internet-horror branch, not the definition of liminality itself.

Diagnostic question: Can your scene communicate in-betweenness without yellow walls, endless rooms, VHS noise or horror lore?
