Customer & Occasion

Define one narrow customer, job or occasion, current substitute and switch reason so the offer can be tested against behavior rather than theme alone.

Customer definition

Narrow enough to be wrong.

A useful segment creates a falsifiable test. “People who like socks and stories” is a theme, not yet a customer decision context.

Segment

Who is in the first test?

Use a reachable segment with a shared context rather than a broad demographic label.

Job / occasion

What is happening when they choose?

Gift, ritual, collection, entertainment, self-expression, novelty or another explicitly defined occasion can create different comparison sets.

Substitute

What do they do instead?

The real competitor may be another product, a newsletter, a gift, a subscription, doing nothing, or a routine that already satisfies the job.

Interview discipline

Questions should reveal decisions, not invite compliments.

Use customer conversations to understand behavior and language, then still seek an observable commitment.

Stronger prompts

  • Tell me about the last time you solved this occasion or job.
  • What did you choose instead?
  • What made that option worth paying attention to?
  • What would make this concrete offer inconvenient or not worth it?

Weak evidence

  • “That sounds cute.”
  • Social likes without a defined commitment.
  • Friends agreeing with the founder’s enthusiasm.
  • Hypothetical willingness to pay with no behavioral follow-through.
